Journey Inward vs. Journey Outward

I have been experiencing pausing. I have been calling out my pauses in action as I turn my attention away from one thing and onto another. PAUSE. What are you looking at? PAUSE. What are you listening to? PAUSE. What are you touching? PAUSE. What are you writing? PAUSE. I am breathing. PAUSE. HOLD. The next breath feels like a relief. I am full of gratitude in that moment.

I paused to take this photograph during a walk in the back woods. I was drawn to the beauty and life within the resurgent decay of a tree stump castle door. That’s some being’s home and entrance to the world, I thought. I contemplated the world beneath my feet. The pausing action when I am walking in nature is curious and investigative. My eyes drink in the colors and textures. The hairs in my nose are awakened by brisk air. My hands feel the sting of the frosty temperature. And my eyes are drinking in the many hues of green and browns. I am taking note to bring this kindness of attention to my meditation practice today.
